Cognitive 
Therapy

Cognition refers to the process of learning, remembering, and using knowledge.  Cognitive changes may happen for a number of reasons, including, but not limited to:  brain injury, stroke, Parkinson's disease, dementia, and various other neurological disorders.  These changes may affect an individual's memory, problem solving skills, work performance, and ability to perform daily routine tasks.

Cognitive impairments may present as:

  • difficulty concentrating or focusing

  • difficulty remembering information, appointments, events

  • forgetting to take medication

  • difficulty planning or organizing daily activities

  • difficulty completing household tasks

  • reduced safety awareness and judgement

Therapy focuses on identifying a person's abilities and challenges to establish a treatment plan that will meet the needs and goals of the patient and his/her family.   Family members and caregivers are welcome to participate in treatment sessions to learn how to promote carryover of strategies and techniques to maximize independence and quality of life.
